The snowbird Medicare guide.
Splitting time between Florida and another state is one of the most common South Florida retirement patterns. It is also one of the patterns where Medicare plan choice matters most.
The core question: which state is "home."
Medicare considers the address on your Social Security record your home state for plan purposes. Whichever state you designate as your primary residence determines which Advantage plans are available to you, but it does not change how Original Medicare or Supplement plans work — those follow you across state lines.
Why Supplement plans usually win for snowbirds.
A Medicare Supplement plan has no network. Any provider in the United States who accepts Medicare accepts your Supplement plan. If you spend six months in Florida and six months in Massachusetts, your Plan G works the same in both states. This is the cleanest answer for most people who travel between two states regularly.
Why Advantage plans get complicated.
Advantage plans typically only cover emergency care outside the plan's service area. If you need ongoing specialist care during the months you are in your second state, the plan may not cover it, or may cover it only at out-of-network rates. Some Advantage plans offer a "national" or "PPO" version with broader coverage, but the trade-offs are usually significant.
A few snowbird-specific tips.
Use Florida as your primary residence if you spend more than six months a year here — the tax implications usually favor it. Set up a Florida primary care physician even if you only see them twice a year. Keep medication prescriptions filled at a national pharmacy chain that has locations in both states. If you are seasonal residents and have not yet declared Florida primary, weigh the tax considerations carefully before changing.
